About the Position

The Research Group in Applied Thermodynamics, led by Prof. Stephan Leyer, is inviting applications for a PhD Candidate position. This role offers the opportunity to work on cutting-edge research in areas critical to thermodynamics and fluid mechanics. The selected candidate will also jointly apply for funding under the AFR program of the Luxembourg National Research Fund.

Research Topics

As a PhD candidate, you will have the chance to contribute to groundbreaking research in one or more of the following areas:

  • Adiabatic Boiling
  • Evaporation Modelling
  • Machine Learning in Fluid Mechanics
  • Flashing Phenomenon in Adiabatic Riser Pipes
  • Heat Transfer Optimization
  • Cavitation
  • Wire Mesh Sensor Optimization

Candidates are encouraged to propose their own topics aligned with the group’s focus.
Your work will include designing experiments, performing simulations, data analysis, publishing results, and participating in workshops.

Your Profile

We are looking for motivated candidates with the following qualifications:

  • Academic Background: Master’s degree in Mechanical Engineering, Physics, or Computer Science.
  • Technical Skills: Knowledge of computational fluid dynamics, design-of-experiments, machine learning, and programming experience (MATLAB, C++, Python).
  • Language Skills: Proficiency in English (knowledge of German, French, or Luxembourgish is an advantage).
  • Soft Skills: Passion for multidisciplinary research, excellent communication skills, and the ability to work collaboratively.
