Natural Resources Institute Finland (Luke) is hiring an ambitious and talented PhD researcher to join the ICE-FISHING project, focusing on the discovery and targeted isolation of microorganisms that utilize rare earth elements (REE). Position Overview
The successful candidate will perform cutting-edge research to:
Identify and analyze REE-dependent enzymes using genomic and metagenomic data from culture collections and environmental samples.
Develop structural models of predicted proteins and design fluorescence in-situ hybridization (FISH) probes.
Participate in field expeditions for sample collection and generate metagenomic data.
Collaborate with a multidisciplinary team to advance microbial understanding of REE utilization.
This project will employ advanced bioinformatics tools, structural modeling techniques, and field-based research to address critical challenges in microbial ecology and biotechnology.
Eligibility Requirements
We are hiring applicants with the following qualifications:
Master’s degree in bioinformatics, microbiology, genetics, or a related field.
Proficiency in analyzing metagenomic data using high-performance computing systems.
Understanding of microbial ecology, metabolism, and associated genetic pathways.
Experience with programming and computational tools for protein folding and structural modeling (advantageous).
Skills in designing and applying fluorescence in-situ hybridization (FISH) probes (preferred).
Fieldwork experience in sampling and molecular laboratory work is a plus.
Excellent communication and organizational skills.
