The I-Form Advanced Manufacturing Research Centre and Digital Manufacturing Ireland (DMI) invite applications for a fully-funded 4-year PhD scholarship in image analysis for advanced manufacturing processes. This research project focuses on developing cutting-edge computer vision and AI techniques to ensure precision and automation in quality inspection during manufacturing.
The successful candidate will benefit from working across two leading-edge institutions: University College Dublin's I-Form Centre and DMI’s state-of-the-art manufacturing facility in Limerick.
Eligibility Requirements
Academic Background: First or upper second-class honours degree in Science, Engineering, or a related field.
Skills and Experience:
Strong foundation in computer vision, AI, or image analysis.
Knowledge of manufacturing processes is a plus.
Programming experience in languages such as Python, MATLAB, or equivalent.
Enthusiastic about interdisciplinary research and developing innovative solutions for advanced manufacturing challenges.
Key Responsibilities
Research and Development:
Design and validate AI-driven image analysis techniques for precision measurements of nano-sized features on manufactured parts.
Develop computer vision methods for geometry retrieval and surface defect detection using techniques such as photometric stereo and structured light.
Implementation and Testing:
Create and test prototype vision-based inspection systems at DMI’s VCMG laboratory.
Develop control algorithms for continuous path planning and quality control of 3D-shaped parts.
Optimization and Evaluation:
Enhance accuracy and precision metrics for automated inspection of complex 3D shapes.
Define metrics for continuous view path operation and 3D data quantification.
Collaboration:
Work closely with academic and industry collaborators at UCD and DMI.
Contribute to project deliverables, publications, and conferences.
What We Offer
Stipend: €28,000 per annum.
Full Fee Coverage: Scholarship includes university fees in addition to the stipend.
