PhD Position Information

Position Overview

The Institut Mines-Télécom (IMT), through Mines Saint-Étienne, invites applications for a PhD position to develop advanced in vitro Ear-Nose-Throat (ENT) respiratory models. This project focuses on the development of cellularized anatomical models for air-liquid exposure in intranasal drug delivery, aiming to improve in vitro-in vivo correlation for respiratory drug development.

This 36-month fixed-term position is based at the Saint-Étienne campus, providing a unique opportunity to contribute to a multidisciplinary project involving engineering, pharmacology, and biomedical research.

Project Description

In vitro 3D respiratory models are essential tools for studying aerosol transport and deposition in intranasal drug delivery. Despite their importance, challenges remain in achieving robust in vitro-in vivo correlations due to anatomical complexity, inter-individual variability, and the difficulty in measuring aerosol deposition.

This project aims to address these challenges by:

  1. Developing 3D-printed, segmented nasal casts representing both adult and infant populations.
  2. Investigating aerosol deposition patterns using advanced markers.
  3. Incorporating cellularized regions in the casts for in situ pharmacokinetic studies.
  4. Building a predictive Physiologically Based PharmacoKinetic (PBPK) model to simulate drug absorption and refine it using clinical trial data.

This project integrates expertise in aerosol science, pharmacokinetics, and biomedical engineering, offering a collaborative research environment with access to cutting-edge facilities.

Eligibility Requirements

We are hiring candidates with the following qualifications:

  • Educational Background:
    • A Master’s degree (or equivalent) in Biological Sciences, Chemistry, Pharmacology, or a related field.
  • Technical Skills:
    • Strong experimental skills with a keen interest in biomedical research.
    • Experience in cellular biology, pharmacokinetics, or 3D printing is an advantage.
  • Personal Attributes:
    • Scientific curiosity and an ability to work independently.
    • Strong collaborative and communication skills.

Responsibilities

As a PhD candidate, you will:

  1. Research and Development:
    • Design and fabricate segmented nasal casts using 3D printing.
    • Investigate regional aerosol deposition patterns using fluorimetric and drug dosage markers.
    • Develop and validate cellularized nasal casts for pharmacokinetic studies.
  2. Modeling and Analysis:
    • Build a PBPK model to predict systemic drug absorption.
    • Integrate in vitro and in vivo data to refine the model.
  3. Collaboration and Dissemination:
    • Work closely with engineers, biologists, and clinical experts at Mines Saint-Étienne and the University Hospital of Saint-Étienne.
    • Present research findings at national and international conferences and publish in peer-reviewed journals.
  4. Engagement and Reporting:
    • Participate in departmental activities, seminars, and summer schools.
    • Write regular progress reports and prepare documentation for project deliverables.
