Research Focus

The PhD project will investigate the interactions between Daphnia (a key freshwater zooplankton species) and cyanobacteria, with a special focus on the biochemical processes underpinning these interactions. This research aims to deepen our understanding of freshwater ecology and biochemical mechanisms.

Key Responsibilities

• Design and conduct factorial indoor experiments exploring Daphnia-cyanobacteria interactions.
• Analyze cyanobacterial metabolites using HPLC and HPLC-MS (High-Performance Liquid Chromatography coupled with Mass Spectrometry).
• Perform lipid analyses using gas chromatography.
• Supervise Bachelor’s and Master’s students in laboratory and practical course settings (approximately 2 semester hours).

Eligibility Requirements

Essential Qualifications:

• A Master’s degree (or equivalent) in Biology, ideally with a focus on experimental freshwater ecology or Daphnia research.
• Strong interest in exploring the biochemical interactions between Daphnia and cyanobacteria.
• High motivation to learn advanced analytical techniques such as HPLC, LC-MS, and gas chromatography.
• Proficiency in English (written and spoken).

Desirable Attributes:

• Basic knowledge of German or a willingness to learn.
