PhD Position Information

Position Overview

The Max Planck Institute for Empirical Aesthetics (MPIEA) is inviting applications for a PhD Position in Cognitive Neuroscience within the Neural Codes of Intelligence research group, led by Dr. Stephanie Theves.

This exciting project investigates the neurocognitive mechanisms underlying concept learning and reasoning, using advanced behavioral and neuroimaging techniques. The research combines novel cognitive tasks with cutting-edge methods, such as functional MRI (fMRI), representational similarity analysis, and pattern classification, to explore key neural processes and individual differences in human cognition.

The PhD position is for a fixed term of 36 months and is based in Frankfurt am Main, Germany, offering a unique opportunity to contribute to groundbreaking research in cognitive neuroscience.

Eligibility Requirements

We are hiring candidates who are scientifically driven, curious, and eager to contribute to our understanding of human cognition. Applicants must meet the following criteria:

  • Academic Qualifications:
    • A Master’s degree (MSc) in Neuroscience, Psychology, or related natural sciences or quantitative disciplines.
    • A strong interest in cognitive neuroscience and human cognition research.
  • Research Experience:
    • Previous experience (e.g., internships, lab rotations, or thesis projects) in cognitive neuroscience is highly desirable.
    • Hands-on experience with fMRI data analysis is a plus.
  • Technical Skills:
    • Solid analytical and quantitative skills.
    • Basic programming experience, preferably in MATLAB or Python.
  • Additional Skills:
    • Proficiency in English (oral and written).
    • Strong organizational and problem-solving abilities.

Responsibilities

As a PhD candidate, your main responsibility will be to conduct experimental research in cognitive neuroscience, culminating in your PhD thesis. Specific tasks include:

  1. Experimental Design:
    • Preparing and designing behavioral and neuroimaging experiments.
  2. Data Collection and Analysis:
    • Acquiring data through neuroimaging (fMRI) and cognitive tasks.
    • Analyzing experimental data using advanced computational techniques, such as representational similarity analysis and machine learning approaches.
  3. Dissemination of Research:
    • Preparing results for presentations at scientific conferences.
    • Publishing findings in peer-reviewed journals.
