The Norwegian University of Science and Technology (NTNU) is inviting applications for a PhD position in the field of Digital Twin for a Circular Built Environment. The successful candidate will contribute to the development of digital tracking and tracing solutions for wood-based materials within circular value chains, advancing sustainability in the construction industry.
This three-year, full-time PhD position is based at NTNU’s Department of Manufacturing and Civil Engineering in Gjøvik, Norway. It is part of the Horizon Europe-funded CIRCULess project, which aims to implement circular economy principles in wood-based construction by improving traceability, sustainability, and reverse logistics. The goal of the position is to obtain a doctoral degree while driving innovation in material optimization and closed-loop systems in the construction industry.
Eligibility Requirements
We are hiring motivated candidates who meet the following criteria:
Academic Background:
A Master’s degree in Civil Engineering, Architecture, Computer Science, Geomatics, or a closely related field.
An academic background equivalent to a five-year Norwegian degree program, with 120 credits at the master’s level in engineering.
Technical Expertise:
Proficiency in Building Information Modeling (BIM), Geographic Information Systems (GIS), and data analytics.
Familiarity with digital product passports and reverse logistics is an advantage.
Academic Performance:
A strong academic record with a grade equivalent to B or better on NTNU’s grading scale.
Language Proficiency:
Fluency in written and spoken English.
Preferred Skills (not mandatory):
Experience with Unreal Engine (UE) or blockchain technologies.
Interest in circular construction processes.
Responsibilities
As a PhD candidate, your primary responsibilities will include:
Research and Development:
Conduct high-quality research on digital twins to optimize circular wood value chains.
Develop and test digital tracking and tracing methods for building elements in closed-loop systems.
Collaboration:
Work with interdisciplinary teams across academia, industry, and the public sector.
Contribute to NTNU’s active research environment and collaborate with the CIRCULess project team.
Publication and Dissemination:
Publish research findings in peer-reviewed journals and present at international conferences.
Contribution to the Academic Community:
