PhD Position Information

About the Position

The Discrete Algebra and Geometry (DAG) group within the Discrete Mathematics (DM) cluster at the Department of Mathematics and Computer Science (M&CS), TU/e, invites applications for a PhD student position. This role is perfect for individuals passionate about Lie groups, geometry, and their applications in signal processing and machine learning. The research focuses on extending tools from invariant theory to the discrete setting, addressing challenges such as noisy data and practical applications in localization, mapping, and metrology.

You will be supervised by Prof. Mireille Boutin, working within a vibrant team that bridges theoretical algebra/geometry with practical applications.

Responsibilities

  • Conduct original research on extending invariant theory tools to discrete settings, addressing noise-related challenges.
  • Develop models using polynomials for applications in localization, mapping (e.g., GPS), and metrology (e.g., object detection and classification).
  • Collaborate with researchers to explore new areas of application within the field.
  • Engage in teaching-related tasks for 25% of your employment.
  • Publish findings in academic journals and present them at conferences.

Eligibility Requirements

We are looking for enthusiastic and motivated candidates with the following qualifications:

  • Master’s degree in Mathematics or a closely related field.
  • Strong research-oriented attitude and a passion for advancing knowledge in invariant theory and its applications.
  • Solid knowledge of algebra and geometry.
  • Proficiency in programming (e.g., Python).
  • Experience with symbolic computation software for computational commutative algebra.
  • Fluent in spoken and written English.

Start Date: Flexible, based on mutual agreement.

What We Offer

Join one of Europe’s leading universities in a dynamic, interdisciplinary, and international environment. Benefits include:

  • Employment Contract: Full-time employment for five years, with a go/no-go evaluation after nine months.
  • Salary: Competitive, based on Dutch Universities’ Collective Labour Agreement, scale P (starting at €2,872 and up to €3,670 per month).
  • Bonuses: Annual vacation allowance of 8% and year-end bonus of 8.3%.
  • Benefits:
    • Pension scheme, paid pregnancy/maternity leave, and partially paid parental leave.
    • High-quality training programs to develop your skills as a researcher.
    • On-campus children’s daycare, sports facilities, and commuting/work-from-home allowances.
    • Access to state-of-the-art technical infrastructure.
    • Support for international candidates, including a Staff Immigration Team and a tax compensation scheme (the 30% facility).

How to Apply

To apply, submit the following documents via the Apply button on the official TU/e website:

  1. Cover Letter: Outline your motivation and qualifications for the position.
  2. Curriculum Vitae: Include a list of publications and contact details for three references.
