PhD Position Information

We are inviting applications for a fully funded PhD position focused on designing innovative funding approaches to support the recovery of carbon-rich peatland ecosystems in the UK. This interdisciplinary project spans ecological science, policy analysis, and investment strategies, offering the opportunity to work with leading academics and practitioners in the field.

Project Overview

The project aims to:

  1. Develop scalable methods for monitoring carbon and biodiversity metrics in restored peatlands.
  2. Understand the trajectories of nature recovery in peatlands under restoration.
  3. Analyze current funding mechanisms supporting nature recovery in the UK and internationally.
  4. Design investment-ready packages bundling biodiversity and carbon benefits to attract diverse funding sources.

This PhD is part of the NETGAIN initiative and will involve fieldwork at Corrour Estate, which hosts peatlands at varying stages of restoration, and collaboration with international partners.

Candidate Profile

We seek candidates with:

  • A strong interest in nature restoration policies, ecological sciences, and financial mechanisms for nature recovery.
  • Experience in ecological surveys, fieldwork in challenging environments, or remote sensing techniques.
  • Skills in stakeholder engagement, such as conducting interviews.
  • Interest in peatland ecosystems, biodiversity, and carbon markets.

Applicants with backgrounds in environmental geography, ecology, remote sensing, or investment in environmental markets are particularly encouraged to apply.
