Position Overview

The Mathematical Institute at Leiden University invites applications for a fully funded 4-year PhD position within the ERC Consolidator project Enumerative and Arithmetic Geometry of Logarithmic Curves (EAGL) under the supervision of Professor David Holmes. This exciting opportunity focuses on the geometric and arithmetic properties of families of curves. The precise research topic will be tailored to the candidate’s interests and background.

You will join a dynamic research group specializing in enumerative and logarithmic geometry, within a broader Leiden community engaged in algebra, geometry, and number theory. Regular participation in local reading groups and national/international algebraic geometry seminars will enrich your experience.

Key Responsibilities

  • Conduct independent research leading to a PhD thesis within four years.
  • Actively participate in project-related seminars, reading groups, and collaborative activities.
  • Present findings at national and international conferences and workshops.
  • Contribute to the academic life of the Mathematical Institute.

Eligibility Requirements

Educational Background

  • A Master’s degree in mathematics, with a solid foundation in algebraic geometry and/or number theory.

Skills and Competencies

  • Proficiency in written and spoken English.
  • Strong motivation for conducting mathematical research.

What We Offer

Contract and Salary

  • Full-time appointment for one year, extendable for an additional three years based on satisfactory performance.
  • Gross monthly salary ranges from €2,872 in the first year to €3,670 in the fourth year (pay scale P).
