We are accepting applications for a fully-funded 4-year PhD scholarship focusing on the human aspects of implementing digital technologies, particularly artificial intelligence (AI), in manufacturing environments. This interdisciplinary project will explore how manufacturing companies can adopt advanced digital tools while protecting and promoting employee well-being, addressing social inequalities, and fostering a collaborative workplace culture.
The successful candidate will be supervised by Assoc. Prof. Orla Byrne and will work within the I-Form Advanced Manufacturing Research Centre at University College Dublin (UCD) and Digital Manufacturing Ireland (DMI) in Limerick.
Eligibility Requirements
Educational Background:
First or upper second-class honours degree in Business, Engineering, Human-Computer Interaction, or a related discipline.
Skills and Attributes:
Strong interest in human-centric manufacturing and workplace transformation.
Ability to conduct high-quality empirical research.
Strong communication and analytical skills.
Enthusiasm for interdisciplinary research and collaborative projects.
Key Responsibilities
Research and Analysis:
Investigate the impact of AI adoption on employee well-being and workplace conditions.
Study cultural and organizational barriers to digital transformation in manufacturing environments.
Engagement and Development:
Collaborate with industry partners to identify best practices for task reorganization and upskilling initiatives.
Examine the socio-ecological and economic implications of AI implementation.
Policy and Publications:
Publish findings in high-impact journals and present at conferences.
Contribute to developing actionable recommendations for government policy in the area of human-centric manufacturing.
Collaboration:
Work within a dynamic, interdisciplinary team alongside researchers, policymakers, and industry stakeholders.
What We Offer
Living Allowance (Stipend): €28,000 per annum.
