Are you passionate about sustainable agriculture and environmental science? Join a groundbreaking research project at the University of Galway focused on assessing low-emission dairy systems as part of the innovative Zero Zero Project. This fully funded PhD scholarship offers an exciting opportunity to contribute to the development of sustainable dairy farming practices that meet national greenhouse gas (GHG) and ammonia emission reduction targets while supporting economic growth.
Project Overview
Agriculture in Ireland is a significant source of GHG and ammonia emissions, and the sector faces a critical challenge: achieving a 25% reduction in GHG emissions by 2030. Dairy farming, which represents around 15% of national GHG emissions, plays a vital role in rural economic growth.
This PhD project will focus on implementing a low-emission milk production system on commercial dairy farms. Utilizing state-of-the-art models and a unique dataset of innovative low-emission practices, the research aims to evaluate environmental footprints and farm profitability, ultimately creating a blueprint for sustainable, pasture-based dairy systems.
Key Responsibilities
Conduct life cycle assessments (LCA) to measure the environmental footprint of dairy farms.
Perform economic evaluations of farm data using MS Excel and LCA software.
Undertake laboratory analysis and fieldwork utilizing modern analytical equipment.
Collaborate with multidisciplinary teams to support the development of low-emission dairy systems.
