PhD Position Information

About the Position

The Department of Mathematics at Utrecht University is excited to offer a full-time PhD position exploring the mathematics of spatial networks. This is a unique opportunity to dive into groundbreaking research that challenges traditional assumptions in mathematical physics. Instead of assuming matter is continuous, this project will leverage spatial networks—graph-like structures that permeate space—to investigate how network structures influence processes such as diffusion and elastic deformation.

This research has wide-reaching implications, with potential applications in fields like cosmology, materials science, economics, and ecology. As part of this position, you will join the network research group under the supervision of Dr. Ivan Kryven and collaborate with researchers within the PRONTO consortium, including experts at the University of Amsterdam.

Your Responsibilities

As a PhD candidate, you will:

  • Conduct research on spatial networks and their applications in mathematical physics.
  • Develop theories linking network structures to macroscopic behaviours.
  • Publish findings in leading scientific journals and present them at international conferences.
  • Collaborate with consortium partners, industry experts, and other researchers.
  • Take on a modest teaching load, gaining valuable teaching and supervision experience.

Eligibility Requirements

We are hiring a motivated and talented researcher who meets the following criteria:

  • A Master’s degree in mathematics or a related discipline (or near completion of the degree).
  • Strong background in areas such as partial differential equations, probability theory, or stochastic processes.
  • Proficiency in programming languages such as Python or MATLAB is an advantage.
  • Ability to work collaboratively within a team and communicate findings effectively.
  • A passion for mathematical research and its applications in real-world scenarios.

What We Offer

  • A full-time PhD position for four years, starting in 2025.
  • A gross monthly salary ranging from €2,901 to €3,707 (scale P under the Dutch Collective Labour Agreement for Universities).
  • Additional benefits, including:
    • 8% holiday pay and 8.3% year-end bonus.
    • Pension scheme, partially paid parental leave, and flexible working conditions.
    • Access to professional development programs, leave arrangements, and discounts on cultural and IT products.
    • Comprehensive support for academic growth, including training and workshops.
    • Opportunities to engage with a vibrant research community at Utrecht Science Park.

Application Process

If you are enthusiastic about this opportunity, submit your application by 13 January 2025 via the official application portal. Your application should include:

  • A motivation letter detailing your interest in the position and relevant skills.
  • Your curriculum vitae.
  • Academic transcripts.
  • A sample of your academic writing, such as a thesis or research paper.
