The Leibniz Institute of Atmospheric Physics (IAP) is hiring a highly motivated PhD candidate to join the cutting-edge field of atmospheric science. This position offers an exciting opportunity to work with SIMONe (Spread Spectrum Interferometric Multistatic Meteor Radar Observing Network)—a groundbreaking radar technology that provides unprecedented insights into mesoscale dynamics within the Mesosphere and Lower Thermosphere (MLT) region.
This project combines radar remote sensing, high-resolution atmospheric modeling, and state-of-the-art physics-informed machine learning approaches to understand and quantify mesoscale atmospheric dynamics.
Your Role and Responsibilities
As a PhD candidate, you will:
Statistically characterize MLT dynamics by applying machine learning techniques to analyze atmospheric data from SIMONe, capturing higher-order dynamics across various latitudes.
Integrate physics with machine learning to develop innovative models that combine physical principles with radar data for accurate mesoscale dynamics analysis.
Validate radar observations using high-resolution atmospheric simulations.
Leverage UA-ICON simulations to understand key processes using nested high-resolution atmospheric model data.
Your Qualifications
The ideal candidate will have:
A Master’s degree (or equivalent) in physics, engineering, mathematics, or a related field.
A strong enthusiasm for applying machine learning in atmospheric research.
Proficiency in English for effective collaboration and documentation.
An independent work style, excellent communication skills, and a proactive approach to research challenges.
