The Advanced Manufacturing Lab (AMLZ) at ETH Zurich invites applications for a fully funded PhD position focusing on the manufacturing, characterization, and modeling of additively manufactured multi-material parts. This position is part of a groundbreaking 5-year Franco-Swiss research project (FASTE) in collaboration with ISAE SUPAERO in Toulouse, France. The project aims to push the boundaries of additive manufacturing (AM) by exploring the feasibility and mechanical properties of bi-material parts using Laser Powder Bed Fusion (LPBF) technology.
As the first of three planned PhD theses within the FASTE project (2025-2030), this position offers a unique opportunity to lay the foundational work for subsequent research endeavors, including the exploration of Direct Energy Deposition (DED) and Wire Arc Additive Manufacturing (WAAM) techniques.
Key Responsibilities
Process Development:
Investigate the chemical compatibility of iron-based and nickel-based alloys in LPBF processes.
Conduct thermodynamic simulations and experimental studies to identify and mitigate defects (e.g., precipitation, cracks).
Optimize process parameters and explore post-treatments such as heat treatments and machining.
Mechanical Characterization:
Develop methodologies to characterize the quasi-static mechanical behavior (tensile and shear loading) of multi-material LPBF parts.
Design bespoke test benches and select appropriate instrumentation for local and global strain measurements and temperature monitoring.
Potentially extend research to complex loadings (e.g., fatigue, high-temperature conditions).
Collaboration and Project Management:
Coordinate with the AMLZ team and collaborators at ISAE SUPAERO.
Participate in shaping the project direction and contribute innovative ideas.
Gradually assume responsibilities in project management, scientific communication, and publication.
Teaching and Academic Activities:
Engage in teaching activities and contribute to the academic community (up to 20% of the time).
Eligibility Requirements
Educational Background:
Master's degree in Materials Science, Mechanical Engineering, or a related field.
Technical Skills:
Knowledge of metallic additive manufacturing, particularly LPBF.
Experience in material characterization techniques, including microscopy and mechanical testing.
Proficiency in material modeling and thermodynamic simulations (e.g., ThermoCalc).
Soft Skills:
Highly motivated and research-oriented with a proactive and curious mindset.
Ability to work independently and as part of a collaborative team.
Strong communication and organizational skills.
Proficiency in English (knowledge of German and/or French is beneficial).
Other Requirements:
CH/EU/EFTA citizenship or a valid Swiss work permit.
