The Forschungszentrum Jülich invites applications for a fully funded PhD position focusing on the characterization of root and shoot traits in rye heterotic pools. This interdisciplinary research aims to address challenges in breeding climate-resilient crops through state-of-the-art phenotyping methodologies. Successful candidates will join the Institute of Bio- and Geosciences – Plant Sciences (IBG-2) and contribute to a collaborative, cutting-edge research environment.
Your Responsibilities
Characterize root and shoot architecture of selected rye genotypes using imaging-based phenotyping platforms.
Derive quantitative physiological traits in controlled conditions at IBG-2 research greenhouses.
Analyze the association of phenotypes with genetic diversity in collaboration with project partners.
Publish research findings in peer-reviewed journals and present results at scientific conferences.
Collaborate closely with the RYE-HUB network to advance research goals.
Eligibility Requirements
A Master’s degree in Plant Sciences, Agronomy, Plant Breeding, Plant Eco-Physiology, Biology, Botany, or a related discipline.
Strong knowledge of plant physiological processes and plant-environment interactions.
Prior experience in imaging-based plant phenotyping and experimental design is advantageous.
Proficiency in statistical analysis using tools like R software.
Excellent written and verbal communication skills in English; knowledge of German is a plus.
Ability to compile data for research reports and work in an interdisciplinary team.

Contract and Salary
Fixed-term contract for three years.
Salary in line with 65% of pay group 13 of the Collective Agreement for the Public Service (TVöD-Bund), plus a 60% Christmas bonus.
