PhD Position Information

About the Position

Are you passionate about advancing sustainable energy technologies? Join the cutting-edge research at the University of Warwick to contribute to the development of integrated semiconductor-electrocatalyst devices for green hydrogen generation using Silicon Carbide (SiC).

This project focuses on exploring the photoelectrochemical (PEC) properties of 3C-SiC for hydrogen evolution and water-splitting, leveraging its unique material properties, including wide bandgap, high thermal conductivity, and exceptional chemical stability. You will work on a state-of-the-art project that combines material nanostructuring and multi-material system optimization to revolutionize sustainable hydrogen production.

This PhD studentship builds on a £100k grant from the Henry Royce Institute and offers an excellent opportunity to work in an interdisciplinary and dynamic research environment.

Eligibility Requirements

We are looking for motivated candidates with the following qualifications:

  • Minimum Academic Qualification: Bachelor's degree with at least a 2.1 (UK) or international equivalent in engineering, chemistry, or physics.
  • Research Interest: Interest or experience in experimental engineering, chemistry, or physics.
  • Desirable Skills:
    • Knowledge or experience in nanostructuring materials (e.g., nanoparticles, nanowires, nanopores).
    • Familiarity with photoelectrochemical systems, water-splitting, or catalyst optimization.

Responsibilities

As a PhD candidate, you will:

  1. Develop 3C-SiC nanostructures for PEC applications using innovative material conversion techniques.
  2. Optimize a multi-material system with catalysts to enhance hydrogen evolution efficiency.
  3. Contribute to advancing photoelectrochemical hydrogen production methods with a focus on sustainability.
  4. Present your findings at international conferences and publish in high-impact journals.

What We Offer

  • Comprehensive Research Training: Access to state-of-the-art facilities and interdisciplinary research opportunities.
  • Collaborative Environment: Work with leading researchers in energy technologies and materials science.
  • Funding Opportunities:
    • While this position awaits a funding decision, eligible candidates are encouraged to explore alternative funding options in collaboration with the supervisor.

Application Process

Applications are open year-round and reviewed on a rolling basis.

To Apply:

  1. Contact Dr. Vishal Shah with:
    • Your CV outlining your academic background, research experience, and relevant skills.
    • A brief cover letter detailing your motivation for applying and your interest in the project.
  2. Informal chats are encouraged prior to formal applications.

Funding Note: Depending on the time of year, various funding mechanisms may be available for UK/EU or international students. Candidates are encouraged to explore these opportunities alongside their application.
