Position Overview

The Norwegian University of Science and Technology (NTNU), a leader in sustainable solutions for industry and society, is seeking applications for a PhD position focused on the quality control of reclaimed timber. This exciting opportunity is linked to the Horizon Europe-funded CIRCULess project, which aims to advance circularity, recycling, and upcycling of end-of-life (EoL) timber and concrete materials.

This three-year, full-time PhD position is based at NTNU’s Department of Manufacturing and Civil Engineering in Trondheim, Norway. The successful candidate will join an international, multidisciplinary team of researchers and industry partners working to revolutionize sustainability in the built environment.

Eligibility Requirements

We are hiring motivated candidates who meet the following criteria:

  • Academic Background:
    • A Master’s degree in Timber Engineering, Materials Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, Civil Engineering, or a related field.
    • Education equivalent to a five-year Norwegian degree program, with at least 120 credits at the master’s level.
  • Skills and Experience:
    • Strong knowledge of timber as an engineering material and composite materials.
    • Hands-on experience with laboratory techniques in material engineering.
    • A background in sustainability, particularly recycling and upcycling solutions.
    • Familiarity with non-destructive evaluation (NDE) techniques such as Infrared Thermography, X-Ray Computed Tomography, or Ultrasound Imaging is an advantage.
  • Academic Performance:
    • A strong academic record with grades equivalent to B or better on NTNU’s grading scale.
  • Language Proficiency:
    • Excellent written and spoken English skills.
  • Preferred Qualifications:
    • Experience with national or European research projects.
    • Familiarity with polymer additive manufacturing, injection molding, or timber industry processes.

Responsibilities

As a PhD candidate, your primary responsibilities will include:

  1. Research and Development:
    • Develop innovative solutions for the quality control of reclaimed timber, focusing on efficient sorting, separation, and material characterization.
    • Employ cutting-edge non-destructive evaluation techniques and advanced characterization methods, such as FTIR and X-Ray Computed Tomography.
  2. Collaboration:
    • Participate in the CIRCULess project research activities, collaborating with academic and industry partners across Europe.
    • Contribute to NTNU’s research efforts in circular economy and sustainable materials.
  3. Dissemination and Communication:
    • Publish research findings in peer-reviewed journals and present at international conferences.
    • Share research progress with stakeholders, including project partners and the academic community.
  4. Professional Development:
    • Engage in NTNU’s organized PhD program and training activities to further develop technical and professional skills.
