This interdisciplinary research initiative aims to develop innovative methods for urban planning, with a focus on combining mobility measures with Nature-based Solutions (NbS) to create sustainable, engaging, and livable streetscapes.
The PhD research will center on urban soundscape modelling and auralization, utilizing state-of-the-art audiovisual simulations to vividly represent changes in urban environments. By leveraging tools such as SUMO for traffic modelling and Unity for soundscape auralization, the research aims to optimize urban planning for enhanced soundscapes, combining NbS and modal shifts for sustainable urban development.
This position offers a unique opportunity to work in collaboration with TU Wien, TU Munich, and yverkehrsplanung GmbH, with applications focusing on Zurich and Vienna districts.
Your Responsibilities
As a PhD candidate, your tasks will include:
Developing and enhancing an audiovisual simulation approach to communicate urban changes effectively.
Implementing simplified acoustic models for use in a science-design loop.
Conducting traffic modelling and soundscape simulations using tools such as SUMO and Unity.
Investigating the contributions of NbS (e.g., trees, parks, water elements) to urban soundscape enhancement.
Applying optimization models to identify synergies between modal shifts and NbS for sustainable design solutions.
Supporting technical operations in the AudioVisual Room of the Large-scale Virtualization and Modelling Lab (LVML).
Assisting with teaching duties (up to 10% of working time).
Eligibility Requirements
We are looking for candidates with the following qualifications:
Master’s degree in Architecture, Urban Planning, Environmental Planning, Geomatics, Physics, Computer Science, Electrical Engineering, or related disciplines.
Proficiency in programming languages such as C#, Python, or ML tools.
Experience with auralization techniques and environmental sound simulation.
Strong analytical skills and interpersonal abilities.
Fluency in English (written and spoken); German is an advantage.
Knowledge of traffic modelling or Unity software is a plus.
What We Offer
A dynamic, interdisciplinary research environment at one of the world’s leading technical universities.
Opportunities for international collaboration with renowned institutions like TU Wien and TU Munich.
Access to cutting-edge facilities, including the AudioVisual Room and Switzerland’s most advanced virtualization and modelling labs.
