Through cutting-edge AI methodologies, our goal is to revolutionize Earth system modeling and prediction, setting new benchmarks for research and sustainability. The MC³ Center fosters collaboration among four leading institutions: Max Planck Society (Germany), Columbia University (New York), California Institute of Technology, and Carnegie Institution for Science. Successful candidates will engage in pioneering research, combining machine learning, Earth observations, and numerical modeling to address critical global challenges.
Your Responsibilities
As a PhD researcher, you will:
Focus on AI-enabled understanding of land surface processes and their feedback mechanisms in the Earth system.
Develop and apply machine learning models and numerical simulations for advanced climate predictions.
Collaborate with supervisors across partner institutions, contributing to impactful research projects.
Participate in international training activities, workshops, and conferences.
Conduct extended research stays at partner institutions in the US.
Eligibility Criteria
We are looking for candidates with:
A Master’s degree (or near completion) in meteorology, environmental sciences, geosciences, computer science, physics, or related fields.
Basic understanding of terrestrial biogeochemical cycles, ecology, and climate interactions.
Proficiency in scientific programming (e.g., Python, Julia) and experience with numerical models or machine learning.
Familiarity with high-performance computing (HPC) clusters and scripting languages.
Strong written and spoken English skills.
Ability to work independently and in interdisciplinary teams.
Candidates who do not meet all criteria but demonstrate enthusiasm and potential are also encouraged to apply.
What We Offer
Contract: 3-year position, following TVöD Bund (E13, 65%).
International Collaboration: Opportunities for funded research stays at leading US institutions.
Supportive Environment: Multidisciplinary and inclusive team at the Max Planck Institute for Biogeochemistry.
