The Department of Mechanical, Materials, and Aerospace Engineering (MMAE) at West Virginia University (WVU) invites applications for a fully funded PhD position in the field of ceramic materials processing and sintering using microwave technology for Solid Oxide Electrolysis Cells (SOECs) and Solid Oxide Fuel Cells (SOFCs). This project is supported by the U.S. Department of Energy and focuses on developing cost-effective thermal processing methods for electrode materials in energy applications.
Project Overview
This research focuses on exploring innovative microwave sintering techniques to process ceramic materials for SOECs and SOFCs. The work involves the fabrication, thermal processing, and comprehensive characterization of advanced electrode materials to improve cost-efficiency and performance. Key responsibilities will include:
Investigating microwave-based thermal processing techniques for ceramic materials.
Characterizing materials using techniques such as XRD, XPS, SEM-EDX, and electrochemical methods.
Assisting in the fabrication and electrical testing of SOEC and SOFC systems.
Collaborating with a multidisciplinary team of engineers and scientists to meet project objectives.
Eligibility Requirements
We are looking for motivated candidates with:
A Bachelor’s or Master’s degree in Materials Science, Mechanical Engineering, Chemical Engineering, or a related field.
Knowledge of thermal processing and ceramic material characterization.
Experience with advanced characterization techniques (e.g., XRD, XPS, SEM-EDX) is desirable but not required.
Strong problem-solving skills and the ability to work both independently and collaboratively in a team environment.
What We Offer
Fully funded position supported by the U.S. Department of Energy, including tuition coverage and a competitive living stipend.
Access to WVU's world-class research facilities and equipment.
