PhD Studentship in Chemistry, Pharmacy, and Pharmacology: Developing Chemical Probes to Monitor Biological Events

Full Time1 month ago
PhD Position Information

Do you want to work at the forefront of biophysical science and pharmaceutical innovation? The Norwich Research Park Biosciences Doctoral Training Programme (NRPDTP) offers a fully funded 4-year PhD studentship at UEA in collaboration with Nanotemper Technologies GmbH. This project will explore chemical probe development for monitoring key biological processes through advanced techniques. You will study proteins critical to neurological health and pharmaceutical development, working alongside academic experts and industry leaders to develop next-generation solutions.

About the Project

  • Primary Supervisor: Dr. rer. nat. Fraser MacMillan
  • Industry Partner: Nanotemper Technologies GmbH (CASE Partner)

This project will investigate the architecture, dynamics, and function of membrane proteins, particularly focusing on the SLC6 sodium symport transporter (LeuT). LeuT is structurally similar to human neurotransmitter transporters for dopamine, serotonin, norepinephrine, and gamma-aminobutyric acid (GABA), which are involved in critical neurological processes.

Research Focus:

  1. Membrane Transport Proteins and Neurotransmitter Systems:

    • Examine the structural and functional similarities between LeuT and human neurotransmitter transporters.
    • Study their roles in neurological disorders such as depression, ADHD, and anxiety.
    • Explore interactions between transporters and prescribed medications (e.g., antidepressants) and illicit drugs (e.g., cocaine and amphetamine).
  2. High-Value Pharmaceutical Targets:

    • Investigate additional proteins such as Cereblon and Von Hippel-Lindau (VHL).
    • These proteins are significant in drug development and the study of complex disease mechanisms, including cancer.
  3. Development of Novel Probes and Labeling Methods:

    • Create innovative labeling approaches that are scalable for high-throughput experiments.
    • Apply advanced biophysical techniques such as fluorescence, magnetic resonance, and NMR to monitor protein function.

This multidisciplinary research will provide new insights into how nano-scale protein machines operate with high precision and coordination, advancing our understanding of their roles in health and disease.
