PhD Position Information

About the Position

The aim of this research project is to enhance the electrofermentation performance of sugars (xylose, sucrose, and glucose) by improving fundamental parameters such as inoculum selection and working electrode potential. The study will deepen understanding of the underlying mechanisms and steer the process toward specific bioproduct outcomes with industrial potential.

This interdisciplinary opportunity includes:

  • Secondment to the University of Rome (M20–M30) to study optimal reactor configurations under Prof. Marianna Villano.
  • Collaboration with Solar Foods to assess the techno-economic feasibility of the optimized system.

Responsibilities

As a Doctoral Researcher, your main tasks will include:

  • Designing, conducting, and optimizing electrofermentation experiments.
  • Investigating parameters affecting the efficiency and selectivity of sugar fermentation processes.
  • Data collection, analysis, and preparation of high-quality publications.
  • Collaborating with academic and industrial partners during secondments and assessments.
  • Contributing to the TRAMPOLINe research objectives within a dynamic and international network.

Eligibility Requirements

To be eligible for this position, candidates must:

  • Hold an M.Sc. degree in a relevant field, such as Environmental Technology, Biotechnology, or Chemical Engineering (degree must be valid by the start date).
  • Not hold a doctoral degree at the time of application.
  • Have an advanced level of English proficiency (certification required).
  • Comply with the mobility rule: You must not have resided or conducted your main activities in Finland for more than 12 months in the 36 months prior to the application deadline.

Desired Skills:

  • Experience with bioprocess optimization, fermentation systems, or microbial technologies.
  • Strong analytical skills and ability to work independently and in interdisciplinary teams.
  • Programming or statistical data analysis skills are considered an asset.

What We Offer

  • Fully funded position for 3 years with a competitive monthly salary:
